What is Color Correction—Removing Underwater Color Cast pt.3

In parts one and two of the “What is Color Correction?” series we looked at the difference between color adjustment and color correction and discovered that color cast presents a major factor when “cleaning up” an underwater photo. But now you may be curious—what does color cast really mean, especially with respect to underwater photography? [...]

Catalina in October, Galleries Now up to Date!

Well I have high hopes about getting taking dive trips again and getting more photos. So for the mean time, until I can get more photos, I guess now I can start posting more about some of the underwater color correction techniques I’ve been developing.

November at Catalina

Here are photos from a nice dive on the Mr. C in November. There was not a lot of sun this day, it was mostly drizzly with light winds. The visibility was not too bad but I don’t think I got too many good photos this session.

Christmas Kelp on The Mr. C

I don’t know what it is about the Mr. C and the Christmas dive where I always seem to make out with some nice photos. Maybe it’s the relaxed atmosphere of the holidays, with the added bonus of a smaller crowd on the boat. Maybe that’s what I need to zen out and zen in [...]

Leopard Shark August in Catalina

I had to apply numerous adjustment levels to bring around the best second shot, levels, curves, more levels and curves with areas masked out. Lots of masking in the shadow areas so I could push any lighter areas.

Octopus in Shell August in Catalina

Wow! These are photos from some of the best dive conditions I’ve seen. So perfect for natural lighting underwater photography. I really love the picture of the octopus in the sea snail’s shell. This is where color corrections and retouching techniques come in. The Octopus is camouflaged Big!. The photo is as [...]

Lobster Photos at Invertebrate Reserve Catalina Island

No wind, no current, warm water, hot sun. We dove spots we usually don’t get to, like this cool wall that is exposed and usually has way too much wind and current to dive. We dove the invertebrate reserve and I got some nice photos of lobster.

Bat Ray Dive Day, Catalina

Another great dive day. I got some great photos of Bat Rays, one of my favorite subjects. I also got some great movies.

Back to strobe shooting, Farnsworth Banks, Backside Catalina

The backside spots were very cool, that’s the only time I’d been there. We were mostly in deep spots, and I think I was too narked from the previous dives to get many photos, the ones not posted were blurry and generally f’d-up.

Strobeless again, Santa Barbara Island, 5-04

Okay this was such a great day and I love how these photos turned out. We had bright sun and great vis. No strobe on this session, I’d been using it for a while now and always wound up liking my results better after some simple photoshop work and no flash. So [...]
